This is political economics. If labour (yes, small L!) had this country at its heart, it would have the balls to do what many people would agree is the right thing. That is CUT OUT THE WASTE IN PUBLIC SPENDING!! They can't of course because they are now the biggest employer in the UK and to do so would tip the financial equilibrium of the country into freefall. Personally, I think this was deliberately engineered years ago. They knew what they were doing - covering their backsides from the get-go. Good Lord, they even tried to reach the middle classes with the silly notion that a household on £50,000 odd a year is so poor that it needs to claim state help! Umm. duh. It doesn't matter how much I earn if someone offers me free cash....! Now they know that they won't be in office they can safely leave it for the Conservatives to mop up the mess and take the flack for the hard decisions that need to be made to put this country right again.
